Renu Bhat is a ceramic artist based in Middletown, Maryland. She has been making diverse range of functional pottery for last 20 years. She is always trying different ideas, shapes, techniques in pursuit of the most beautiful pots.
I am inspired by many things. Nature, fabric, geometric shapes, patterns and mostly color. In my pieces I try to achieve balance between beauty and function.
My pots are wheel thrown, hand built or altered. working with clay is very meditative. The process is complete when pieces are passed down from my hands to the end user.
While growing up in India I was inspired by my mother’s artwork in sewing, embroidery and her attention to detail. After moving to US my introduction to clay was completely accidental. In 2001 I joined ceramic class in Detroit Michigan to beat the cloudy days and cold weather. I have been hooked ever since.
My husband is an avid birder. he taker beautiful pictures of birds. I paint those using colored slips and under glazes, finally glazed with food safe clear glazes on the top.
I sell most of my work at Potters’ Guild of Fredrick MD. When someone buys a pieces of mine it gives me inspiration to get back to clay and make more.
